Xemnu the Living Titan! ([personal profile] titanicallycuddly) wrote2015-07-22 06:37 pm

Minions;

As the first of the Marvel Monsters Era characters to be canonised into the mainstream Marvel universe, Xemnu has become something of a representative of that era within the 616 canon. He often employs creatures of that era, either by controlling their minds, manufacturing duplicates or in the case of those not canonised in the 616 universe creating them himself. Not all of the creatures here have canonically been used by Xemnu- but I include some of my favourites that he could conceivably utilize.

DIABLO
Demon from the Fifth Dimension

Bio: Originally an invader from the Fifth Dimension, Diablo came to Earth centuries ago to exterminate mankind, but spent hundreds of years regaining strength from the voyage and monitoring mankind. He was repelled by being tricked into believing humans had the power to destroy beings of living smoke via blowing out a lighter.

Xemnu created a duplicate, complete with memories, in order to fight the Hulk and that was destroyed in battle.

Powers: Diablo is made from living smoke and has absolute control of his molecular density, unable to be harmed by conventional methods by simply becoming as insubstantial as mist. Conversely by increasing his density he can give blows powerful enough to send the Hulk reeling. Diablo is also deadly toxic to any life form that breaths in his gaseous form.

Diablo spoke entirely though telepathy and could project images into people's minds, but apparently could not read them.

Weaknesses: Diablo can be blown apart by extremely powerful winds and if scattered too badly will be destroyed. He also has no sense of touch and cannot tell if a captured foe has escaped his smog.

TABOO
the Terrible

Bio: Taboo was a creature from an alien world who crash landed on Earth. Posing as a peaceful creature he pretended he needed scientific help to go home. When provided with a device that contained all of Earth's scientific knowledge, he revealed himself to be an invader on reconnaissance but was scattered by the H-Bomb hidden in the device.

Surviving the blast in many tiny pieces, Taboo restored himself and rampaged through North America before more of his race arrived and revealed Taboo was mentally ill and suffering delusions that he was of a warrior race. They took him home for treatment.

Xemnu created a duplicate to battle the Hulk, memories and delusions intact, that was defeated in battle. Later still he created another for the same purpose.

Powers: Taboo is made of a thick mud or tar like substance. Much like Diablo, Taboo can make himself soft or hard at a thought and therefore is immune to most forms of harm. His ability to reconstitute himself when blasted apart aided his near indestructibility and even the power of a point blank H-bomb blast only inconvenienced him. His great strength was enough to effortlessly destroy buildings and cruise liners. He could fling globs of himself at enemies and harden it remotely to trap them.

Taboo spoke telepathically but had no further psychic powers.

Taboo possessed the power of flight and could fly through space.

Weaknesses: Taboo has no bones and could not brace himself well. His malleable body could also be a hindrance by forcing him into inescapable containment. The duplicate Taboo was sucked into a whirlpool and sealed into a fissure in the Earth from which he could not escape.

Theoretically Taboo requires moisture to remain mobile and his wet form may be susceptible to freezing.

The real Taboo was of a race of inherently peaceful people but suffered from mental instability that caused delusions of being from a proud warrior race. Asserting to him that he is not well can cause him to peacefully cease dangerous acts.

GROOT
Monster from Planet X

Bio: A Flora Colossus from Planet X, Groot was the ruler of his race. For unknown purpose he came to Earth to capture a large number of humans by literally uprooting a town, in order to research and experiment on them. Though immune to human weaponry, a scientist killed him via termites.

It has been confirmed that King Groot here is a separate entity to the Guardians of the Galaxy Groot, but they are of the same species- Flora colossi. King Groot is much more talkative, or at least, intelligible.

Xemnu created a duplicate of Groot to fight the Hulk but this was destroyed in battle.

Powers: Groot's wooden body is phenomenally hard and can ignore conventional weapons and does not burn. This grants him impressive strength as well.

He possesses absolute control over any form of wood, be it a living tree or inanimate lumber. It will move and twist unnaturally to his command, can be converted into very serviceable spacecraft. He can also absorb wood to add to his size and recover from damage. With his own botanical biology he had root himself to the ground and fire razor sharp thorns that are a deadly threat to even the likes of the Hulk.

Weaknesses: Groot is vulnerable to insect invasion of his body, which rapidly weakens and kills him.

Groot's thorns cannot penetrate thick inorganic material such as stone, the slivers meant to harm muscle.

Despite his toughness, he can be simply smashed to pieces by hard impacts.

GOOM

Bio: A renegade from Planet X (not the same one as Groot, it should be noted) that came to Earth to conquer it. His defeat was simple- when his home planet was contacted, police of his world simply came and arrested him.

Xemnu made a duplicate of him to fight the Hulk, but it was destroyed in battle.

Powers: Goom's large size granted him great strength with which he could shatter stone and tear apart steel effortlessly. His rudimentary wings allowed him to fly under Earth's gravity but not that of his own world.

Goom is an extremely powerful telekinetic who could levitate an entire city with the power of his mind and envelop himself in a potent forcefield. By the power of mental concentration he could shrink objects and likely perform other such bizarre feats.

The real Goom wielded a disintegration ray that could destroy a mountain and had a machine that could manipulate time to de-age objects, as well as piloted a space ship. The duplicate had no such equipment.

Weaknesses: Goom's race still needed to breathe and, if buried in quicksand or rocks, would suffocate.

All of Goom's mental powers required concentration that could be broken by pain. His physical strength, while impressive, couldn't overcome even a shrunken Hulk.

Mankind knows him only as...
THE BLIP

Bio: Shzzzllzzzthzz was a peaceful diplomat for his race of electrical lifeforms. When on his way home from a goodwill mission he encountered cosmic trouble and expended too much energy, requiring a stop to recharge on Earth. When met with fearful violence and seeing humans attacking a friend he had made, he declared them barbarians and left as soon as he was recharged.

Xemnu created a much more vicious duplicate of the Blip that believed he had sentenced mankind to death, which battled the Hulk but was destroyed in battle. Later still he made another for the same purpose.

Powers: The Blip is a being of incredible electrical energy, containing billions of megavolts that he could project as destructive bolts. Contact with the Blip was dangerous and as it possessed no organs or bones it was immune to most conventional attacks. He possessed some degree of superhuman strength, but to what extent was not shown. He could absorb electricity to recover endurance.

The Blip was a radically fast flyer that could travel through space unaided.

Weaknesses: The Blip is subject to the common laws of electricity. Though able to maintain a corporeal form under normal circumstances, he could be dissipated or short-circuited such as being thrown into wires.

If he expended too much power he became weaker and could not fly.

DRAGOOM
The Flaming Invader

Bio: Dragoom was a criminal from planet Vulcan who escaped imprisonment. He successfully conquered Earth but was tricked by a movie maker creating props of his own race, which Dragoom assumed were Vulcan police come to capture him. He made his escape into the stars.

Dragoom is precisely the sort of space criminal Xemnu would take control of.

Powers: Dragoom is a being of nuclear fusion, essentially a living star. He could take any shape or size he wished and could emit fantastic amounts of heat. He took the form of a gigantic ring of flame around the world and continued to heat it until mankind surrendered to him. Despite this, Dragoom could willingly not burn objects he came into contact with and used a number of skyscrapers as a throne.

He could fly extraordinarily fast and travelled through space unaided.

Weaknesses: Dragoom is a coward who will run at the first sight of threat.

As a being of nuclear fusion, Dragoom is likely vulnerable to the same materials used as control rods in nuclear reactors. Additionally, as an energy being he is likely possible to disrupt or absorb.

KLUH
Weapon of Living Revenge

Bio: Kluh is a clone of the Hulk created by Xemnu for the express purpose of revenge against the original. Xemnu took the time to engineer out traits he disliked and insert ones that pleased him whilst retaining the original's power. Kluh was an equal match for the Hulk, but had no chance against the Compound Hulk, the unnatural fusion of the red and green Hulks into one body.

Powers: Kluh possesses all of the traditional powers of Bruce Banner's Hulk, presumably the more simple 'Savage' Hulk as that was the one Xemnu took DNA from. However he also has an advanced intellect and an overly verbose vocabulary. This did not seem to much damper his potential for a temper as the smallest thing mad him quite furious indeed. All the same, Kluh was merely a match for one Hulk, not two combined.

Weaknesses: Presumably those of the traditional 'Savage Hulk' save the lack of intelligence.

ZZUTAK
The Thing That Shouldn't Exist

Bio: When an ancient lost tribe of Aztecs tricked a comic book artist into drawing a monster for them using magic pants, the painting came to life as Zzutak. Zzutak was to be the first of an army of such monsters to conquer the world with, but the artist drew a second monster to battle it. The two, utterly indestructible and untiring, battled ruthlessly until they buried one another under an enormous amount of rubble and were trapped.

Somehow Xemnu procured Zzutak or created a copy of him for another altercation with the Hulk. Like the others of this attempt, the Compound Hulk drove it off the world. Xemnu's version looks like Zzutak, but had the colouration of Zzutak's enemy- perhaps Xemnu made his own using the same methods.

Powers: Zzutak was very large and strong, able to move tons of rocks without issue. Because he was not truly alive he could not be killed or harmed in any way, required no food, air or water, and never grew tired.

Weaknesses: Zzutak has only the most rudimentary intelligence and is only able to follow orders and defend himself if attacked.

Despite Zzutak's great strength and immortality, he can be trapped forever if sufficiently buried.

Woodgod
The convergence of myth and science.

Bio: Created by human geneticists in the hopes of making a new race, possessed of mankind's intellect but nature's peaceful co-existence, Woodgod came into accidental conflict with numerous heroes including the Hulk and Spider-Man. He eventually succeeded in creating a race of human-animal hybrids of his own, but the society collapsed in conflict with themselves and humans.

Years later, Xemnu would find Woodgod and increase his powers, placing the genetic experiment under his mental control. He was used as a scout in one of Xemnu's assaults on Earth, but was easily defeated by the Red Hulk.

Powers: Woodgod possesses physical traits far in excess of humans but no match for a Hulk. His formidable strength and agility make him a fairly fearsome opponent. His healing abilities are probably his most impressive trait, as he is able to survive horrendous chemical attacks and great physical trauma. He possesses high intellect and learns quickly.

Weaknesses: Nothing specific, except being beaten up.

Martian Who Walks Among Us
Beware! A Martian prowls among us!

Bio: The Martian came to Earth with the intention of using its shapeshifting powers to spy on Earth in preparation for an invasion. His arrival was witnessed, and they were struck down. Being unfamiliar with human anatomy, he believed the unconscious observer was dead.

The martian spied on Earth for only a few days before the witness discovered a way to detect him, and tricked the martian into falling down an elevator shaft.

A long time later, Xemnu either recreated this martian or obtained another as a soldier to battle the Hulk. When Xemnu was defeated, it was driven from Earth.

Powers: In its true form, the martian was large and strong, and could smash through a wall and elevator with ease. The martian possessed shapeshifting power and usually did so by copying an existing human.

Presumably, Xemnu improved his martian because he considered it worth bringing to a Hulk fight, but we never saw it do anything except pose menacingly.

Weaknesses: Infrared rays could be used to detect the martian, even in human form. The original wasn't too durable, and died from a long drop down an elevator shaft. What improvements, if any, Xemnu gave it were not seen.

The Venusian
Unsuspected by the Earthlings!

Bio: A venusian was one of several over the centuries that lived in secret on Earth, a secret guardian of their beloved sister planet, Earth. He successfully thwarted a martian's espionage.

Xemnu created or procured a venusian of his own, and appeared to have granted it greater power.

Powers: The original venusian showed no powers at all, aside from a penchant for disguise allowing him to pass for human.

Xemnu's Venusian could project some kind of mental energy blast that could injure the Hulk. Presumably, Xemnu engineered this ability, otherwise it could have easily destroyed the martian from the original story.

Weaknesses: The original venusian could be easily physically overpowered by the martian above. The Compound Hulk easily choked out Xemnu's version. In other words, nothing specific, except being beaten up.

Creature from Krogarr
Pity-- Mercy-- The are for weaklings and fools!

Bio: A warrior race from a distant planet called Krogarr conquered and enslaved the people of nearby planets. One created a device that made it possible to transport vast distances through television signals, and to prove it to his fellows, he kidnapped an ordinary man. Invasion of Earth was prevented by the man's slovenly nature- by forgetting to pay his electric bill, the television shut off and he returned home. The creature from Krogarr was swiftly killed by his own people for 'lying' to them.

Xemnu created or procured his own Creature from Krogarr for battle against the Hulk. The Creature proved to be a valuable part of Xemnu's forces, but was driven away from Earth after Xemnu's defeat.

Powers: The original Creature didn't need to exhibit much in the way of powers, aside from being large enough to carry a man in its hand- the species is presumably fairly powerful and intelligent, as interplanetary conquerors.

As part of Xemnu's attack squad, the Creature was able to trade attacks with the Hulk and live to tell about it, though it's likely it wouldn't have fared so well solo.

Weaknesses: Nothing specific, aside from being beaten up.

THE TWO-HEADED THING

Bio: The Two-Headed Thing's origins are unknown, but spent countless ages digging from the Earth's core to the surface. When emerging, it destroyed a prison wall and released a prisoner that followed it as it roamed. The thing tested its incredible powers to prove they worked on the surface, intending to use its abilities to conquer the surface world. After discovering its powers worked on plants, animals and humans, it turned its attention to conquest- but was struck by lightning, something it could not have possibly anticipated. This placed it in suspended animation.

The comatose Two-Headed Thing would later be revived and defeated by the Fantastic Four. Afterwards, it was sent to Monster Isle, where it was eventually placed under Xemnu's mental control.

Powers: The Two-Headed Thing is 20 foot tall and strong, able to trade blows with fellow Thing, Ben Grimm. Its brains are so powerful that everyone in the vicinity hears its thoughts.

The Two-Headed Thing's most phenomenal power is its shapeshifting ability. It can absorb the atoms of a target, causing them to disappear and the Thing to become or resemble it but retain its great strength. Regardless of form, it can move, including becoming a walking tree. When it reverses the process, the target will return unharmed.

Weaknesses: The Two-Headed Thing's craggy hide is a defence against physical attacks, but less protection from energy, being defeated by lightning and heat in the past.

GRUTAN
aka The Mighty Hulk

Bio: Albert Poole was an incredible inventor and mentor to Hank Pym, who was mocked his whole life for his short stature. After failing to create a growth serum, Albert changed tact to creating a giant robot he could pilot for life. He daydreamed of world domination. Eventually driving away Pym over a small mistake, he was left alone with Grutan, his invincible robot, and sealed himself inside with a lifetime's supply of food and water pills. Only Grutan itself could open the hatch.

Unfortunately, Albert left the starter key outside and having chased away his only friend, no one would come to save him. Presumably, he spent the rest of his life in the robot.

Theoretically, Xemnu's power to animate lifeless matter could make use of the indestructible machine.

Powers: Grutan is 15' tall, supposedly indestructible, and capable of incredible feats of strength, such as lifting a nuclear submarine weighing thousands of tonnes.

Weaknesses: Grutan is inanimate and will stand silently forever without a pilot.

Albert likely did not consider unconventional methods such as magic when declaring his hulk indestructible.

THE GLOP
aka The Hulk

Bio: A truly enigmatic being, The Glop appeared in a film where he arrived on Earth via a spacecraft and rampaged across the Earth, crushing skyscrapers in his hands. He was eventually defeated somehow (details are sparse, as we see only snippets of the film and the audience's reactions to the intense scenes) and his body fell into the ocean.

As the theatre emptied, the Glop returned to life and somehow stepped out from behind the screen- this, too, was part of the movie. It happened once more, a movie about a creature who comes to life in a movie about a creature that comes to life. Finally, the process repeats again and the Glop seemed to enter the real world!

The story abruptly ends there, but presumably, the Glop was somehow driven back or destroyed. Xemnu would be quite interested in an entity able to travel through film, especially in a world of mobile phone screens.

Powers: The Glop's powers are little known- in the film he was mind-bogglingly massive, a city's tallest buildings only reaching his ankles. He laughed off an airstrike.

The Glop can apparently move between reality and fiction or perhaps an alternate dimension. In doing so, he changes size to fit through the portal, but seems to grow and shrink from panel to panel.

Weaknesses: The Glop was defeated and dropped into the ocean, no doubt by some clever sci-fi twist, but how is unknown.

The Glop could potentially be destroyed by attacking the medium it is in at the time.

RORGG
King of the Spider Men!!

Bio: Rorgg was the king of a race of spider-like aliens. They travelled everywhere through their webs, which they could project at faster-than-light speeds and ride across space. Rorgg convinced his people to become conquers using this power and they chose Earth for their first invasion.

They descended on a small Mexican town and isolated the inhabitants with a net of webbing to test how humans could resist before moving on to larger cities. The humans couldn't get through the web or harm the invaders, until one boy had the idea of poisoning Rorgg with the town's entire supply of DDT. Seeing their leader fall, the spider men fled, believing the gas to be a common weapon.

Rorgg was not dead, only comatose, and was revived later to battle the Fantastic Four. After his defeat, he was sent to Monster Isle and fell under Xemnu's control.

Powers: A 15' tall hexapod, Rorgg is strong enough to smash buildings but not to the enormous standard of some monsters and he can ignore most conventional weapons. He can expel webs from his mouth. The web is stronger than steel and charge them with electricity, disrupting communications and injuring enemies. He can retract it to drag captives into his mouth. The web can travel faster than light, and he can survive in space to ride them.

Weaknesses: Toxic chemicals can immobilise Rorgg indefinitely.

Rorgg was similar enough to Earth insects abilities which worked on them, such as Ant-Man's, were effective on him.

MAKLUAN

Bio: Makluan's are a race of giant, dragon-like aliens from a peaceful, advanced society. However, a handful of their species reject the 'tedium' of peace and have headed out into the galaxy to seek excitement and conquest. The most famous example of this is Fin Fang Foom.

Xemnu brings a Makluan to his attempt to defeat the Hulk. They deal some serious damage to Hulk, but are no match for the Compound Hulk who uses them as a flamethrower against Xemnu.

It's unlikely this particular version was Fin Fang Foom himself but they were definitely a reference to him on a meta-level.

Powers: Makluans are shapeshifting dragon-like aliens. Their powers include changing their size to kaiju proportions, growing wings or taking on human form. Xemnu's stayed comparatively small, only a little larger than Hulk. They also have impressive regeneration, strength and stamina.

They can breathe an acidic mist that looks like fire, and this one's breath is sufficient to harm both the Hulk and Xemnu quite severely.

Weaknesses: The Makluans are vulnerable to a herb found in China that causes them to enter a comatose state.

The HOARFEN

Bio: The secret child of the Fenris Wolf and a frost giantess, and therefore grandson of the frost giant Loki and the hybrid elderspawn Angerboda. Hoarfen was used to guard his uncle's castle, a frost giant named Siingard. His true purpose, the reason he was bred for, was to participate in Ragnarok as a surprise weapon.

Hoarfen was revealed early when the Hulk was on an adventure in Jotunheim. Hoarfen successfully killed and ate Hulk and a companion, but the companion happened to have a connection with Hel, who helped them revive. In the meantime, he rebelled against his uncle and rampaged. Hulk escaped up Hoarfen's throat and broke his jaw, causing him to flee.

Many years later, Hoarfen somehow found his way to Earth, by the trip had weakened him to a small size. He was defeated by the Avengers, and returned to Jotunheim.

Xemnu could become aware of Hoarfen after this event and be quite impressed with the creature.

Powers: Hoarfen is an enormous monster. At full power, he possesses horrifying strength and durability, easily killing the Hulk and taking on Thor and other powerful foes with ease.

As a partial frost giant, he is immune to cold and partially made of ice.

With his impressive mixed heritage, Hoarfen is probably capable of magic or other powers but he seems to prefer rampaging.

Weaknesses: Hoarfen is much smaller and weaker in his second appearance on Earth- this may be due to the common frost giant weakness of shrinking in heat. Or perhaps exerting himself reduces his size, as his long journey was blamed for his weakness.
